1989–90 : The last time Liverpool FC won a league title. It’s been nearly three decades since that season and in those long years , there have been only a handful of times when they have been very close to the league title (2008–09 , 2013–14 being the closest they could have been to lay hands on that elusive trophy).
Be it hard luck or a “slip” here or there , they should have had atleast two more league titles by now which would have been enough to shut the noisy north west rival in Manchester.
As a Liverpool fan , you expect the drought to end and as soon as possible but managerial shortcomings , ownership frailties and inadequate squad depth over these years have always in some way hindered them from claiming their 19th First division title.
In October of 2015, Liverpool appointed a certain German by the name of Jurgen Klopp , the Borussia Dortmund ‘legend’ who showed Bayern that the Bundesliga is more than just a single horse race winning it back to back in 2010–11 and 2011–12. His appointment instilled a fresh confidence in the Liverpool faithful as they laid their trust in the “Normal One” to finally end their wait.
Fast forward , three years and Liverpool are off to their best ever start to a Premier League season and still unbeaten after 17 games. It’s been a long process where Klopp had to trim the squad and sign some quality players to set up the foundation for a long and successful (not yet but hope so!) campaign.
I really wish Klopp’s hardwork and the board’s trust in him finally pays off. The fans believe this season is the best bet for Klopp as he has a world class squad and given Manchester city’s ambition to win the Champions League, they might blip at some time in the league and Liverpool should pounce on every such opportunity.
Klopp’s First inherited XI:
Mignolet - Clyne,Skrtel,Sakho,Moreno - Lucas , Can ,Milner , Lallana,Coutinho- Origi
Liverpool XI vs Manchester United (16.12.18):
Alisson-Clyne,Van Dijk,Lovren,Robertson - Fabinho,Wijnaldum,Keita - Salah,Mane,Firmino
Subs: Mignolet,Milner, Henderson,Shaqiri,Lallana,Moreno,Sturridge
Such major differences in the squad and particularly the bench strength is proof of Klopp’s vision - “ In four years at this club , we would have won the title” from his first interview as Liverpool manager.
Bottom line : They deserve to win the Premier League this season.
